Sultan of Sokoto Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III has conferred the traditional title of Kuliyan Sokoto on Is-haq Oloyede, former director of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board. The honour recognises his contributions to education, Islamic affairs and national development, according to Tribune Online.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, awarded the traditional title of Kuliyan Sokoto on Sunday to Is-haq Oloyede, former secretary-general of JAMB, Nigeria’s university admissions body. The ceremony was held at the sultan’s palace in Sokoto, according to Tribune Online. The title recognises Oloyede’s contributions to education, Islamic affairs and national development.

Oloyede said the distinction had both a religious and traditional dimension. A Yoruba Muslim from Egbaland in southwestern Nigeria, he thanked the sultan and the people of Sokoto, saying he did not personally believe he deserved the honour. The sultan also chairs the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs.

The reception held after the ceremony brought together politicians, traditional leaders, academics and religious officials from different parts of Nigeria. A congratulatory message from the king of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, praised Oloyede’s integrity and academic career. The distinction comes amid health concerns in Sokoto, where authorities have stepped up Ebola-related monitoring, according to an announcement published on 27 October.
