Bandits killed seven members of a local self-defence group and abducted more than 30 residents in Kaura Namoda, Zamfara State, according to the local council chairman and residents. The attack, which lasted more than three hours on Friday night, also left several people injured, Daily Trust reports.

Armed men killed seven members of a local vigilante group and abducted residents during a night-time attack in Kaura Namoda, Zamfara State, north-western Nigeria. Local government chairman Munnir Haidara confirmed the death toll to Nigerian daily Daily Trust.

The attackers reportedly entered the town around midnight on Friday via a route along a river and operated there for more than three hours. The number of abductees has yet to be established: Munnir Haidara said local authorities were still collecting data, while a resident interviewed by Daily Trust estimated that more than 30 people may have been taken.

According to residents quoted by the newspaper, the attackers evaded monitoring posts usually set up on the outskirts and blocked access routes during the fighting. Members of the vigilante group were injured and treated in hospital, the local government chairman also said. One resident attributed their disadvantage to limited weaponry, including pump-action shotguns and homemade weapons.
