A joint operation by Senegal’s army and gendarmerie led to the detention of 28 people, including nine women, at a compound described as an MFDC political site in Ziguinchor. Phones, documents and insignia were also seized, according to a source close to the case cited by Dakaractu.
The Senegalese army and gendarmerie detained 28 people, including nine women, at a compound in the Lyndiane Coboda neighbourhood on the outskirts of Ziguinchor, presented as the headquarters of the political wing of the Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance (MFDC), according to Dakaractu.
The people detained had gathered there to commemorate the anniversary of the death of Abdou Elinkine Diatta, a figure in the Casamance rebellion, according to a source close to the case cited by Dakaractu. Security forces removed an MFDC flag displayed at the site and seized 17 phones, documents and insignia attributed to the movement.
The 28 people and the seized items were handed over to the Ziguinchor gendarmerie’s Research Section, which is continuing its investigation. The phones are to be examined as part of the inquiry, according to Dakaractu.
The operation comes amid recent developments in Casamance, including the launch of three fish-processing units on 22 October. On 24 October, 520 women received free screening in Ziguinchor.
