A campaign to prevent cancers affecting women enabled 520 women to receive free consultations and screening at Ziguinchor military hospital. Organised over two days by Military Zone No. 5, it also led to 65 children being vaccinated, reports Seneweb.

A total of 520 women received free consultations and screening for breast and cervical cancer at the Médecin-colonel Georges Nioucky military hospital in Ziguinchor during a campaign held on 23 and 24 October 2026, reports Seneweb.

The operation also led to 65 girls aged between 9 and 14 being vaccinated against human papillomavirus, which causes several cervical cancers, according to Seneweb. Doctors, midwives and paramedical staff raised participants’ awareness of risk factors, warning signs, early screening and breast self-examination.

The campaign, organised by Military Zone No. 5 for the families of the Defence and Security Forces as well as civilians in Ziguinchor and surrounding areas, is part of cancer prevention activities for women in Senegal. It follows the screening of 500 women in Joal by LISCA and the Senelec Foundation on 16 October, and calls for better monitoring of breast and cervical cancer made on 18 October.
