Wayne Rooney says Manchester United players are not meeting the club’s standards and must show greater commitment after their 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth. The former club captain also defended manager Michael Carrick, according to comments reported by 3news on 27 October 2026.

Wayne Rooney, a former Manchester United captain, has called on the English club’s players to show greater commitment and take responsibility for their performances after their 3-0 Premier League defeat by Bournemouth on Sunday 25 October. He also defended manager Michael Carrick, saying the former midfielder understands the demands of the job, according to 3news.

On the Stick to United podcast, Rooney said some players did not seem to understand the expectations attached to the Manchester United shirt. He said he wanted to challenge them directly over the quality of their performances and was concerned by the lack of emotion he sees in the team.

His criticism follows Manchester United’s 4-1 defeat by Como in the Champions League, after which he called some players selfish. The club kept Carrick in his post after the defeat by Bournemouth, as questions were raised about his future.
