The Ogun State government says an ambulance and Federal Road Safety Corps personnel arrived ten minutes after an accident was reported in Saapade. It thus disputes actor Kunle Afod’s claims that there was no emergency response for about 20 minutes, according to the Ogun government.
The Nigerian government of Ogun State says an ambulance and Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) personnel, responsible in particular for road interventions, arrived ten minutes after an accident was reported in the Saapade area. The accident, which occurred on Friday, was reported at 12:18 to an FRSC post in Ogere and emergency responders arrived at the scene at 12:28, according to a statement by the governor’s special adviser on media and strategy, Kayode Akinmade.
The Ogun government said the responders had to use the opposite carriageway to reach the accident scene. It said six ambulance points are located between OPIC and Ogunmakin, along the Lagos-Ibadan highway, and that its emergency call centre had received no distress call from that road concerning the accident.
The Nigerian police and the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), responsible for traffic control in the state, also took part in the rescue operation. The victims were taken to Victory Hospital in Ogere, while the most seriously injured were transferred to Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) in Sagamu, according to the government.
The government also accused Nollywood actor Kunle Afod of politicising the accident in a video filmed at the scene. It said the actor supports Ladi Adebutu, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for governor of Ogun, while acknowledging his right to support the political candidate of his choice.
