Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Prime Minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Ralph Gonsalves have called for reparations for African countries for the transatlantic slave trade and colonial exploitation. They want the reparations to include concrete measures to address the economic and social consequences of slavery, beyond apologies and recognition of historical injustices, according to Tribune Online.
Olusegun Obasanjo said that the progress of people of African descent should not lead to erasing the crimes of the slave trade, during a panel discussion at Creative Africa Nexus Weekend 2026 in Lagos. Ralph Gonsalves, for his part, highlighted renewed international attention to the historical consequences of slavery following a 25 March 2026 decision by the United Nations General Assembly recognising the transatlantic slave trade and the enslavement of Africans as a serious crime against humanity, according to Tribune Online.
