The Nigerian government has launched a 400-kilometre gas pipeline project valued at $100 million to connect gas resources to industrial and commercial centres in the south-east of the country. The investment agreement was signed on Tuesday in Enugu, according to Nigerian newspaper Vanguard.
The route is to serve the states of Enugu, Anambra, Imo, Abia and Ebonyi. Around 150 potential customers have been identified, with expected demand of 254 million cubic feet of gas per day. The project is being led by the South East Development Commission (SEDC), a federal body tasked with supporting the region.
President Bola Tinubu, represented at the ceremony by Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu, presented the pipeline as a means of strengthening manufacturing and attracting investment. He cited manufacturers in Aba, the industrial hubs of Nnewi and Onitsha, and Ebonyi’s agro-processing and manufacturing activities among the sectors likely to benefit.
