Senegal aims to save around 140 billion CFA francs a year from 2026 by supplying its power stations with locally extracted gas. Energy and Petroleum Minister El Hadji Abdourahmane Diouf defended this policy at the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) summit, according to Pressafrik, which cited a statement from his ministry.
Discussions focused on adding value to Senegalese gas, the Gas-to-Power strategy, logistics infrastructure and local content. The Senegalese delegation took part on 26 and 27 October in the eighth GECF summit in Moscow, chaired by Russian President Vladimir Putin, with El Hadji Abdourahmane Diouf holding talks with his Russian, Azerbaijani, Iranian and Qatari counterparts.
The ambition is part of the case for gas as an African driver presented by the minister on 27 October. It is also linked to Senegal Vision 2050, which makes energy a lever for economic sovereignty and industrial transformation, according to the ministerial statement.
