The Edo State Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) denounces arrests, threats, attacks on its offices and destruction of political material targeting its members over six weeks. The party has asked security authorities to investigate the violence, which it attributes to people linked to the APC, according to P.M. News.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC), an opposition party, called on Tuesday 28 October for investigations into alleged intimidation and political violence in Edo State. At a press conference in Benin City, its state director for the Obi/Kwankwaso campaign organisation, John Yakubu, accused people associated with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), according to P.M. News.
John Yakubu said the NDC had received reports over the past six weeks of illegal arrests, threats, disrupted meetings and damage to offices or campaign materials in the state’s three senatorial districts. The party is calling in particular for investigations into the detention of its members, damage to its posters and alleged pressure on traditional leaders, youth groups and traders’ associations.
The NDC also asked the authorities to examine reports of gunfire allegedly targeting members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) during a rally in Igueben, which, according to reports cited by the party, left several people seriously injured. It also wants an investigation into a statement attributed to the APC chairman in Edo State, Jarrett Tenebe, concerning the alleged use of AK-47 rifles against opponents during the 2027 elections.
The party says the authorities must establish what was said and in what context, and determine whether it constitutes an offence. The NDC’s demand came after the ADC in Osun State called on Nigerians to defeat the APC in 2027, on 28 October.
