Nador West Med’s first container terminal has begun operations, allowing MSC and its subsidiary Terminal Investment Limited to start activities at the Moroccan port. Its East terminal will be able to accommodate ships with a capacity of 24,000 TEUs, MSC CEO Diego Aponte said, as cited by Libe Maroc.
The first container terminal at Nador West Med, a Moroccan port complex in Nador Province, began operations on Saturday 31 October. Its East terminal, operated by a consortium including Marsa Maroc, the Moroccan port operator, and Terminal Investment Limited, a subsidiary of the MSC shipping group, will be able to accommodate container ships with a capacity of 24,000 TEUs, according to Diego Aponte, CEO of MSC and Terminal Investment Limited.
Diego Aponte described the start-up as an important milestone for the MSC group and stressed that the complex also includes energy infrastructure. The launch of operations was presided over by Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan in the commune of Iaâzzanène.
The East terminal starts with an annual capacity of 3.5 million TEUs, according to data published at its opening. The commissioning follows the announcement in the preceding days that the first terminal at Nador West Med would be launched, and the presentation of its initial capacity of 3.5 million TEUs.
