Congolese government spokesperson Patrick Muyaya says Félix Tshisekedi’s visit to Russia does not mean abandoning the Washington and Doha peace processes. He explains that Kinshasa is also seeking support from Moscow, a permanent member of the Security Council, to implement resolutions 2773 and 2808, according to his post on X.
The Congolese government spokesperson, Patrick Muyaya, said on Saturday that Félix Tshisekedi’s visit to Russia did not call into question the Washington and Doha peace processes for the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In a post on X, he denounced interpretations portraying Kinshasa as having abandoned these mechanisms in favour of Moscow, according to Mediacongo.
Patrick Muyaya explained that Félix Tshisekedi was seeking Russia’s support, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, for the implementation of resolutions 2773 and 2808. These texts notably concern the security situation in the east of the DRC and international demands for the withdrawal of Rwandan forces and the M23 from occupied areas.
The spokesperson recalled that the Congolese president had lamented on 29 October the slow progress of efforts conducted with Washington and Doha, while asking Moscow to help turn them into reality. He also cited the US sanctions announced on 28 October against Rwanda’s Ministry of Defence and Zigama Credit and Savings Society, which Washington accused of supporting the M23.
This clarification comes after Félix Tshisekedi defended the Washington and Doha processes in the DRC on 30 October, and asked Moscow on 29 October to implement the resolutions on the east of the Congo. It follows his calls for Russia to support the Rwandan withdrawal and contribute to existing diplomatic mechanisms.
