Moroccan gay migrants who arrived in Ceuta after the late-July departures are seeking asylum in Spain, fearing they will be sent back to Morocco. Fariha, a 29-year-old transgender woman from Tangier, described the violence she suffered to EFE and her hope of living freely in Spain.

Moroccan gay migrants who arrived in Ceuta during the mass entries at the end of July are seeking asylum in Spain, fearing that they will be sent back to Morocco, Yabiladi reports, citing Spain’s EFE news agency. Fariha, a 29-year-old Moroccan from Tangier who identifies as a transgender woman, says she risks being killed if she returns and fears she will commit suicide if her application is rejected.

Fariha swam to Ceuta on 30 July after seeing on social media that many people were trying to reach the Spanish enclave. She had an injured hand at the time, requiring 25 stitches after an assault by her father, according to her testimony reported by EFE.

The applications come after the evacuation, on 5 October, of a camp housing 3,000 migrants on a beach in Ceuta. They also take place amid Spain’s returns of migrants to Morocco, carried out by Spain on 27 October.
