Venâncio Mondlane accuses the administration of Mozambique’s Inhassoro district, in Inhambane Province, of refusing a meeting and police protection for members of his party. The leader says tensions amount to a situation of declared war, following violence against local Anamola officials.
Mozambican political leader Venâncio Mondlane has denounced an Inhassoro district administrator’s refusal to authorise an Anamola meeting and provide police protection in Inhambane Province. He said his party was « almost in a situation of declared war » with the province at the opening of the extraordinary convention of the National Alliance for a Free and Autonomous Mozambique on Sunday, according to Jornal Tropical.
Anamola had asked the Inhassoro district government to secure the private venue where its members were to follow the convention online. According to Mondlane, the local administration rejected the request and sent police to prevent the meeting, which he described as an infringement of the party’s political rights.
The convention in Maputo brings together more than 400 delegates. They are to consider revisions to Anamola’s statutes, its ideology and the functioning of its structures. Venâncio Mondlane is also facing proceedings in a case whose trial has been postponed to 17 November.
