Manchester United plans to build a 100,000-seat stadium near Old Trafford, at a cost of more than £2 billion. The project is part of a £7.3 billion-a-year Greater Manchester regeneration programme, while supporters are being consulted on the final design.
Manchester United is preparing to build a 100,000-seat stadium about 350 metres from Old Trafford, as part of a regeneration project in the Trafford Wharfside area. Season-ticket holders and club members are being consulted so they can influence the final design, Tuko reports.
The new stadium is intended to replace Old Trafford, which currently accommodates between 74,000 and 75,000 spectators. The project, designed by Foster + Partners, would cost more than £2 billion and would be funded by Manchester United, with naming rights and commercial partnerships among the options being considered. The club has already acquired about 25 acres of land for £63.5 million.
The wider plan includes up to 15,000 homes, tens of thousands of jobs, improved transport and potentially a new railway station. Authorities estimate that the possible economic benefits for Greater Manchester could amount to £7.3 billion a year. Official planning applications are expected in late 2027 or early 2028, followed by five years of construction, with an opening targeted for around 2035, according to Tuko.
