The Grand Water Transfer could begin in 2027 after studies are completed and compensation assessed, with 13.8 billion CFA francs allocated in the initial budget. Contracts could be concluded before the end of 2026, according to APS cited by Senego, while 20 billion earmarked for compensation was removed from the 2026 supplementary budget.

The Grand Water Transfer project has an allocation of 13.8 billion CFA francs in the initial 2027 finance bill. Prime Minister Ahmadou Al Aminou Lo said on Sunday that the project had not been abandoned, according to Senego, which also cited the Senegalese Press Agency (APS).

The start of the works still depends on finalising studies, identifying affected people and assessing compensation. Contracts could be concluded before the end of 2026, while the works are scheduled for 2027. The 20 billion CFA francs allocated to launching compensation payments were removed from the draft supplementary budget for 2026.

Funding for the Grand Water Transfer must still be included in the initial finance bill for 2027. The project comes amid budget preparations, while the National Transition Council is also examining Mali’s 2027 budget. Mali’s NTC examines the 2027 budget
