Late rains and input shortages disrupt Mali’s cotton season

The late rainy season and unavailability of subsidised inputs are disrupting the cotton season in several regions of Mali. In Yorosso and Koutiala, farmers have reduced their acreage or switched to food crops, while the outlook remains better in Kita, according to the source.

The late start to the rainy season and the unavailability of subsidised inputs at planting time are disrupting the cotton season in several regions of Mali. In Yorosso and Koutiala, many farmers have reduced the area devoted to cotton or abandoned it in favour of food crops.

In the Yorosso cercle, the delay in the rains and the late provision of inputs have thrown the agricultural calendar into disarray. Farmer Abdoulaye Goïta, who had planned to grow cotton on four hectares, has scaled back his ambitions. The outlook remains encouraging in Kita, however.
