Nigeria’s proven natural gas reserves rose from 208.83 trillion cubic feet in 2023 to 215.19 trillion cubic feet in January 2026, Taofeek Balogun, head of infrastructure and demand at the Decade of Gas secretariat, announced. He was speaking on Thursday in Kano at a meeting with the media organised by the secretariat and the presidential initiative for compressed natural gas and electric vehicles.

Average gas production rose from 6.86 billion to about 7.5 billion cubic feet per day, while domestic supply exceeds 2 billion cubic feet per day, according to Balogun. He also reported $3.5 billion in committed investment in four major gas projects.

The OB3 gas pipeline is 100% complete and the AKK gas pipeline is about 95% complete, Balogun said. Public funding of 671 billion naira for infrastructure attracted about 1.6 trillion naira in private investment.

The official also said that Nigeria is aiming to transition on 24 September 2028 to a gas market based on the willing buyer, willing seller principle. In the transport sector, Tosin Coker, operations director of the presidential initiative for compressed gas and electric vehicles, announced the deployment of 670 gas-powered buses. Of these, 285 are operating commercially in 13 states and 302 have been allocated to transport unions, students and public bodies.
