Kenya Power advises households to unplug unused appliances to reduce their electricity bills. The distributor says residual consumption by equipment left plugged in, even when switched off, can increase monthly expenses after the recent tariff review, according to a message posted on the social media platform X.

Kenya Power, Kenya’s public electricity distributor, recommends unplugging unused appliances to reduce household bills. In a message published on the social media platform X on Friday 30 October, the company warned about so-called “phantom consumption”, Tuko reports.

The phenomenon, also known as standby consumption, concerns appliances that continue to draw electricity when they remain plugged in, even when switched off. Kenya Power also advises using energy-efficient equipment and managing its use at home more effectively.

The warning comes as Kenyan households face higher electricity costs following a recent tariff review by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).
