Interview examines Abiy Ahmed’s political vision in Ethiopia

France 24 presents an analytical interview on Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s political vision and tensions in Ethiopia. The programme discusses his relations with Eritrea, access to the Red Sea and foreign influences, according to France 24.

France 24 has devoted an interview to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s political vision and the country’s persistent divisions. On Journal de l’Afrique, journalist Fatimata Wane speaks to Éloi Ficquet, a historian and anthropologist, senior lecturer at EHESS and a specialist in Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa.

The discussion focuses in particular on Abiy Ahmed’s conception of power, relations between Ethiopia and Eritrea, and Ethiopia’s desire to gain access to the Red Sea. It also examines the drivers of internal conflicts and the influence of the United Arab Emirates and other international partners.

The interview comes amid persistent tensions, four years after the Pretoria agreement was signed to end the war in Tigray. Abiy Ahmed has been in power since 2018.

In recent days, the prime minister has urged Ethiopians to take charge of their national future, and then called on Eritrea to prioritise peace and shared development. Tensions between the two countries also prompted US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to call for dialogue on 16 October. Abiy Ahmed’s calls for peace with Eritrea are part of this regional context.
