Dulce Assunção, a mother of five in São Tomé and Príncipe, is seeking medical assistance and housing after several years of illness, including diabetes. A campaign launched by her relatives aims to fund her treatment and the construction of a house, Rádio Somos Todos Primos reports.
In São Tomé, Dulce Assunção, a 33-year-old resident of Trindade, is seeking medical assistance to treat her diabetes and other illnesses, as well as decent housing for herself and her five children, Rádio Somos Todos Primos reports. She explained in particular that she slept on the floor without a mattress when she lived in Batepá.
Her appeal went viral after a video was shared on social media. Her brother and sister, Rafa and Janete, launched a fundraising campaign to pay for her food, treatment and the construction of a house on land made available to her by her sister in Trindade. “We are waiting for more people to help us with medical assistance,” Janete Silva said.
The Directorate of Social Protection, Solidarity and Family says that Dulce Assunção has benefited from the Vulnerable Family Programme since 2019 and has been monitored by its services. It nevertheless acknowledges the scheme’s limitations and calls for social protection stakeholders to intervene in infrastructure, health and education, according to Rádio Somos Todos Primos.
