Nearly 9,000 VHS cassettes donated by China remain unused in the basements of Radio Centrafrique after being moved from the warehouses of Central African Television (TVCA) during renovation work, Corbeau News Centrafrique reports. The boxes contain blank Tape King E-180 and E-120 tapes intended to record national television programmes.
The labels indicate that the shipment was sent by Tibet Int’l to the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation, with Philippe Ouaradague as the final administrative recipient, according to Corbeau News Centrafrique. Technicians now use digital cameras and computer files, while the equipment needed to play the analogue tapes is reportedly no longer available in modern control rooms.
The storage of these boxes has occupied space in two public institutions for several years and raises again the question of assessing needs before accepting donations intended for state media, according to Corbeau News Centrafrique.
