Sulemana Braimah, executive director of the Media Foundation for West Africa, says illegal mining has got out of control in Ghana. He is calling on the NDC and NPP to acknowledge the involvement of their members and join forces against the phenomenon, according to MyJoyOnline.
Sulemana Braimah, executive director of the Media Foundation for West Africa, said on Saturday that illegal mining in Ghana, known as ‘galamsey’, had become uncontrollable. He called for a national response based on honesty and cooperation rather than accusations between parties, during JoyNews’s Newsfile programme, MyJoyOnline reports.
Mr Braimah said that both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had failed to resolve the problem. He asked both parties to acknowledge the involvement of some of their members and officials in illegal mining.
He added that President John Dramani Mahama had acknowledged the involvement of NDC members in galamsey, while members of the former NPP government had also been implicated. In his view, this acknowledgement could enable the two parties to overcome their differences and jointly combat illegal mining.
The remarks came after the Ghanaian minister’s call for elected officials to be held accountable over galamsey, published on 16 October.
