Ghanaian actor James Gardiner says the commercial success of the country’s films depends more on audience support and production quality than on population size. The deputy executive secretary of the National Film Authority has urged Ghanaians to give local productions more support in an interview with Joy FM.

Ghanaian actor James Gardiner is calling on the public to give greater support to films made in Ghana, saying population size should not be the main measure of their commercial success. The deputy executive secretary of the National Film Authority (NFA), the public body responsible for cinema, spoke on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z programme, MyJoyOnline reports.

James Gardiner defended the importance of local audience support and attention to every stage of production. In his view, a quality film can find an audience beyond the country’s borders, but Ghanaian viewers should also support local works rather than judge them more harshly than foreign productions. He added that several Ghanaian films deserved a wider audience.

Actress Yvonne Okoro, also a guest on the programme, said Ghanaian viewers often looked for flaws in local films while accepting foreign productions of comparable or lower quality. The NFA runs, among other initiatives, a Film Development Fund intended to support development, production, distribution, promotion, training and cinema infrastructure.
