Gary Neville believes Michael Carrick should leave his post as Manchester United manager as the club endures a run of eight matches without a win. The former United captain said on the *Stick to Football* podcast that some managers need to be sacked “for their own good”.
After the 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth on Sunday, United’s executives reportedly discussed Carrick’s future before deciding to keep him, Neville said, adding that he did not know what had been discussed. In his view, the decision would reflect a lack of preparation, available options and the ability to make a decision. United have won only two of their 12 matches in all competitions this season and have taken only seven points from eight Premier League matches, their worst league start in 40 years.
The 45-year-old manager was due to hold a press conference on Thursday ahead of Saturday’s trip to Chelsea. Supporters applauded him after the defeat by Bournemouth, while the players were booed as they left the pitch. Neville also cited his experience at Valencia, where he said he was relieved to be sacked.
Manchester United’s executives had kept Carrick in the job after the defeat by Bournemouth on 27 October, and considered several replacements, including Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann, on 26 October.
