Kenyan well-wishers raised 318,000 shillings in less than 24 hours to help Betty Yego’s family buy land and build a house. The appeal was launched by Derrick Mbugua after his visit to Kiambu, where 11 people were living in a dilapidated home, reports Tuko.
A fundraiser launched by Derrick Mbugua, a benefactor from Kiambu, raised 318,000 Kenyan shillings in less than 24 hours to help Betty Yego’s family buy land and build a semi-permanent home, reports Tuko. Eleven people — Betty Yego’s parents and their nine children — were living in a dilapidated house.
Mbugua had set a target of 200,000 shillings for the land purchase and 100,000 for construction. The local community, mobilised by deputy chief Christine Tekei, contributed a further 16,000 shillings. The pastor and local chief are to oversee the land purchase and construction work, Mbugua said.
Betty Yego’s father, David Kitui, thanked the donors. The young woman had attracted attention after being filmed in distress near Kenyatta University.
