Voters in Washington, Colorado, Arizona and Nebraska approved measures limiting certain transgender rights, including in sport and care for minors. The result could complicate the Democrats’ strategy ahead of the 2028 presidential election, according to TimesLIVE.
Voters in Washington, Colorado, Arizona and Nebraska approved measures on Tuesday 3 November limiting certain transgender rights. The measures notably ban transgender children from participating in sports teams corresponding to their gender identity or prohibit gender-affirming surgeries for minors, reports TimesLIVE.
The result comes as Democrats won the midterm elections nationally and regained control of the US Congress. Three of the four states that adopted these measures, Washington and Colorado and Arizona, also elected Democrats to a majority of their seats at federal and local levels, according to TimesLIVE.
Rachel Tomlinson Dick, executive director of LGBTQ advocacy group Out Nebraska, called the result “discouraging” and said she expected similar measures in future elections. Lanae Erickson, vice-president of centrist think tank Third Way, believes Democrats held up better against Republican attacks on these issues during the campaign, without yet convincing voters on the substance, according to TimesLIVE.
