A drone strike on Tanqong market in the Dumaya district of Nyala killed at least 102 civilians and wounded 113, according to local officials and human rights organisations. The health minister in the Tasis government, aligned with the Rapid Support Forces, said hospitals had been placed on alert, while witnesses attributed the attack to Sudanese army drones, Radio Tamazuj reports.
A drone strike on Tanqong market in the Dumaya district of Nyala killed 102 civilians and wounded 113 people on Monday evening, according to Alaa al-Din Nugud, health minister in the parallel Tasis government, cited by Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday. Health authorities placed hospitals and health centres on alert to receive the wounded.
Adam Musa Obama, executive director of the independent Darfur Victims Organization, told Radio Tamazuj that witnesses had reported 120 people killed or wounded. His organisation documented 14 civilian deaths at the market, including 12 women and six children. These figures do not match the toll given by the minister.
Witnesses cited by the organisation said the market was crowded at the time of the attack and attributed the drones to the Sudanese army. Minister Nugud also accused the Sudanese Armed Forces of carrying out the attack. Sudan has been at war since April 2023 between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.
The strike comes after a drone attack on a market in Nyala, which killed more than 20 people, according to a toll published on 27 October. On 23 October, Khartoum denied any involvement in a deadly strike in Abyei.
