Djibouti’s Council of Ministers has approved postponing regional and municipal elections from February to April 2027 so they do not take place during Ramadan. The decree extends councillors’ terms until the vote; they were due to end on 11 February 2027, reports the Djibouti News Agency.

The Djiboutian Council of Ministers approved on Tuesday 27 October the postponement of regional and municipal elections to April 2027, although they had been scheduled for February, to avoid holding them during Ramadan, according to the Djibouti News Agency (ADI). The draft decree also extends the terms of regional and municipal councillors until April.

The elected officials’ terms were due to end on 11 February 2027. Ramadan is expected to run approximately from 8 February to 8 March. The authorities consider the postponement necessary to allow citizens to observe the fasting month and ensure better organisational conditions, ADI reports.

The decision was examined at the 12th session of the Council of Ministers, following a presentation by the Ministry of the Interior. It follows the Council’s meetings in September, one of which approved several texts on 30 September.
