Djibouti and the European Union assessed their migration cooperation at a Migration Day event held in Djibouti under the patronage of Interior Minister Omar Abdi Saïd. Discussions focused in particular on two programmes dealing with migration governance and the management of mixed flows, reports Lanation.

Djibouti and the European Union reviewed their joint programmes on migration governance and the management of mixed migration flows on Monday at a Migration Day event held at the Ayla Grand Hotel. The meeting was held under the patronage of Omar Abdi Saïd, Djibouti’s Minister of the Interior, according to Lanation.

The programme to support migration governance in Djibouti was officially launched at the meeting, which also brought together its steering committee. A second programme, supporting Djiboutian authorities and non-state actors in managing mixed flows, was the subject of a second monitoring meeting.

Participants included Yonis Ali Guedi, Djibouti’s Minister of Labour, the European Union’s ambassador to Djibouti, and representatives of national and international organisations. The two programmes are being implemented with the support of the International Organization for Migration, amid complex population movements in the Horn of Africa and around the Red Sea.

The meeting follows Djibouti’s appeal for increased aid for refugees on 15 October, as part of discussions with its partners about needs related to population displacement. The request was made during an appeal for increased aid for refugees.
