Fenerbahçe beat Liverpool 3-2 in Istanbul during the fourth matchday of the Champions League league phase, coming from behind twice. Vedat Muriqi scored the decisive goal in the 79th minute, Bénin Web TV reports, while Punch highlights Liverpool’s second successive defeat in all competitions and the end of their perfect Champions League run.
Liverpool took the lead in the 25th minute through Trey Nyoni, who scored his first professional goal after collecting a poorly cleared ball in the area. Mason Greenwood equalised four minutes later with a deflected free-kick, despite an attempt by Irfan Can Kahveci hitting the bar, Bénin Web TV and Punch report.
After half-time, Fenerbahçe goalkeeper Ederson kept out several Liverpool chances. Introduced alongside Cody Gakpo and Florian Wirtz in a triple change by Andoni Iraola, Alexander Isak put the visitors back in front in the 69th minute with a header from a Gakpo cross, with his first touch of the ball, according to Punch.
Archie Brown equalised four minutes later at the far post from a N’Golo Kanté cross following a short corner. In the 79th minute, Vedat Muriqi then headed home a cross in the area, allowing Fenerbahçe to win after three matches without victory in the league phase, under interim manager Dirk Kuyt, Bénin Web TV reports.
Punch says the match produced 39 shots, including 12 on target, according to a report by The Independent. Liverpool therefore lost their record of three consecutive Champions League victories and suffered a second successive defeat in all competitions, following their 1-0 loss to Arsenal on Sunday. The English club are due to travel to Crystal Palace on Sunday, Punch adds.
