Burundian expert Rémy Marie Nkurunziza says electric vehicles can cut fuel import costs and pollution. He calls for skills development in the technology and welcomes the installation of a solar charging station in Bujumbura, according to Iwacu Burundi.
A Burundian expert is calling for more people to be trained in electric vehicles as their use grows in the country. In an interview published by Iwacu Burundi, he says their adoption could reduce fuel imports and pollution while drawing on locally produced energy, such as solar power and hydropower.
The expert describes the installation of a solar-powered charging station in Bujumbura by a Burundian investor as “beneficial”. In his view, if electric cars made up 40 to 50% of the vehicle fleet, they would reduce fuel needs and queues at supply points. He cautions, however, that this would not be enough to resolve shortages, as Burundi depends entirely on imported fuel. The shift to electric vehicles would reduce that dependence in the medium term, but the country would still need fuel.
