Burundi commemorated the 33rd anniversary of the assassination of Melchior Ndadaye, the country’s first democratically elected president, in Bujumbura on Wednesday 21 October 2026. President Évariste Ndayishimiye laid a wreath on the former head of state’s grave, then on the grave of the Unknown Martyr, according to the Burundian media outlet Iwacu.

The ceremony was held under tight security at Democracy Martyrs’ Square. Participants were searched with sniffer dogs and detectors, while Melchior Ndadaye’s widow, Laurence Ndadaye, former president Sylvestre Ntibantunganya and several institutional officials attended the tribute, according to Iwacu.

The commemoration came after former Burundian president Pierre Nkurunziza published a defence of a unifying national memory on 12 October. It also took place a few days after Évariste Ndayishimiye launched Burundi’s anti-corruption strategy on 16 October.
