Botswana ranked third in Africa and 70th worldwide in the 2026 edition of the Chandler Good Government Index, which assesses states’ ability to govern and deliver results. The ranking covers 133 countries, according to the Chandler Governance Group.

Among the African countries assessed in both 2025 and 2026, 71% improved their overall score, putting Africa second among world regions for governance progress this year. The continent’s greatest gains were in public financial management and improving the conditions that enable people to progress, said Dinesh Naidu, director of knowledge at the Chandler Governance Group.

The ranking is based on 35 indicators divided equally across seven pillars. The 2026 edition covers countries representing 94% of the world’s population, compared with 120 countries included in 2025.
