Bayelsa United target return to Nigeria’s top flight

Relegated last season, Bayelsa United are targeting an immediate return to Nigeria’s top flight after scoring 35 goals in ten pre-season matches. The team will begin its 2026-2027 second-division season on 8 November against Abia Comets at Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa, according to coach Abdul Maikaba.

Bayelsa United are targeting an immediate return to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) after their relegation last season. Their technical adviser, Abdul Maikaba, says the team are ready for the 2026-2027 second-division season, the Nigeria National League (NNL), according to Daily Trust.

The club scored 35 goals in ten pre-season matches, an average of 3.5 per game. Maikaba said he was pleased with his players’ attacking efficiency, while noting that the team still needed to fine-tune some aspects of its game. Bayelsa United notably beat Ogunbor United FA, a team from Sapele, 4-1 in a match played at Southern Delta University in Delta State.

Bayelsa United are due to begin their NNL campaign on 8 November 2026 against Abia Comets at Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa. The news comes as Rivers United and Rangers remained level at the top of the league after their 1-1 draw on 2 November.
