Aston Villa, an English Premier League club, has threatened Jamie Carragher, a former Liverpool defender turned sports pundit, with legal action over remarks targeting the club and its supporters. Villa chairman Nassef Sawiris announced on Friday that the club would take legal action over “unacceptable insults”, Reuters reports, as cited by Punch.
On the Stick to Football podcast, Jamie Carragher had told Aston Villa supporters to “shut up” and said the club would “never be Manchester United”. He was reacting to speculation about manager Unai Emery possibly leaving for Manchester United, where Michael Carrick’s position is uncertain. Aston Villa did not specify the legal basis for the proposed proceedings.
Jamie Carragher later tried to calm the controversy, saying on social media that it was a joke linked to criticism from Villa supporters. He also reposted clips in which he praised Unai Emery and Aston Villa, notably after the club’s victory in the 2026 Europa League final in Istanbul, according to Reuters. The debate comes after Gary Neville called for Michael Carrick to leave Manchester United, on 30 October.
