Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta reminded 16-year-old Max Dowman that he must meet the same standards as the other first-team players after his dismissal against Fleetwood Town. The youngster received a three-match ban, and Arteta said he had spoken to him without their relationship being affected, Punch reports.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has told 16-year-old English midfielder Max Dowman to meet the same standards as the other first-team players after he was handed a three-match ban in the English League Cup. The youngster was sent off against Fleetwood Town after reacting to a heavy tackle by Harrison Neal, BBC Sport reports.
Arteta said he had spoken to Dowman on Thursday and insisted there was “no problem” in their relationship. However, he said the player had to learn to handle provocation, pressure and the disappointments of professional football to earn his place at Arsenal.
Dowman’s dismissal against Fleetwood was the teenager’s second red card this month, after he was sent off for England Under-19s against the United States. The Football Association rejected Arsenal’s appeal against the punishment, confirming Dowman’s three-match ban. The decision followed the club’s appeal after Arsenal were knocked out by Fleetwood Town in the League Cup round of 16 on 27 October.
