Former player Annie Kalomo pays tribute to Carol Garoes, her former coach at Black Africa and with the Namibian netball team. She highlights her demanding discipline, attention to fitness and protective bond with her players, according to The Namibian.
Former Namibia international Annie Kalomo credits her former coach Carol Garoes with having a major influence on her approach to coaching netball. Kalomo describes Garoes, who coached her at Black Africa and in the national team, as a strict coach committed to fitness and discipline, The Namibian reports.
According to Kalomo, Garoes’s demanding training sessions had made Black Africa one of the fittest teams in the league, to the point that it never lost a match for physical reasons. Her former player Helen Oliphant, a member of Namibia’s team at the 1995 World Cup, says Garoes taught her to fight until the final whistle and encouraged her to become a coach.
Carol Garoes was also secretary-general of the Namibia Women in Sport Association and the Africa Women in Sport Association. Kalomo took over as Black Africa coach in 1997, when Garoes left her position because of travel related to her work at the ministry responsible for gender issues, according to The Namibian.
