Senegalese trade union alliance And Gueusseum has postponed its 48-hour strike to 19 and 20 November 2026, after a truce during the Youth Olympic Games. The unions accuse the government of failing to honour its commitments and say health represents only 3% of the CFA7,000 billion national budget, according to their statement.
The And Gueusseum Alliance of autonomous health unions has postponed its strike from 12 and 13 November to 19 and 20 November 2026. In a statement published on Sunday 1 November, the organisation’s directorate attributed the delay to the truce observed during the Youth Olympic Games in Senegal, according to Senego.
And Gueusseum says it is continuing its movement because of the government’s failure to honour its commitments and the lack of responses to its demands concerning the health sector’s social liabilities. The alliance also criticised the share allocated to health in the CFA7,000 billion national budget for 2026, which it estimates represents only 3%, compared with the 9% recommended by the World Health Organization and at least 15% provided for under the 2001 Abuja commitment.
The truce coincided with the Dakar 2026 YOG, held in Senegal, and came after a period of political calm observed around the Games on 31 October. And Gueusseum presents the temporary suspension as a gesture in support of the event’s success, without abandoning its demands.
