The steering committee for the African Decade of Education 2025-2034 wants to use existing education structures to coordinate the continent’s strategies and funding. Meeting on 20 and 21 October in Abidjan, it also called for measurable skills to be prioritised, according to the African Union.
The African Union (AU) Continental Steering Committee for the Decade of Accelerated Action for Education and Skills Development 2025-2034 concluded its inaugural two-day meeting in Abidjan on 20 and 21 October 2026. It agreed to rely on education structures already in place across the continent, according to Adeanet.
Chaired by Gaspard Banyankimbona, AU Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, the meeting also called for measurable skills capable of promoting value creation in Africa to be prioritised. The committee is thus entering its operational phase, with the mission of aligning partners’ interventions with continental priorities, limiting overlaps and better coordinating funding.
The Decade, declared in February 2025 as a framework for implementing several African strategies, covers education, technical and vocational training, science and technology, digital education and artificial intelligence. These priorities are to be coordinated over 10 years, with shared resources and monitoring, in line with the AU’s Agenda 2063 and United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4.
The committee was established following a high-level partner consultation held on the sidelines of the AU summit in Addis Ababa in February 2026. Its chair called on members to prioritise concrete results, saying their work would be judged by what they achieve.
