An incursion by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) killed several civilians, set fire to houses and looted property in Makeu, in Lubero territory, North Kivu. The attack, carried out on the morning of 3 November, targeted a recently resettled village, according to Samuel Kaeni, president of the civil society organisation in the Bapere sector.

An incursion by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), an Islamist armed group active in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, killed several civilians on the morning of 3 November in Makeu, in the Bapere sector of Lubero territory, North Kivu. The attackers also set fire to houses and looted property, according to Samuel Kaeni, president of Bapere’s civil society, cited by Beto.

The attack began at around 7.30am, as the village had just welcomed people displaced by war who were trying to resume their activities. Samuel Kaeni called on the authorities to prevent the ADF from advancing southwards, which he said could lead to further violence against civilians.

The ADF had re-established itself in the Bapere sector after retaking Makumo on 28 October, the day after a first attack was repelled. On 2 November, 29 people abducted by the group in neighbouring Mambasa territory, Ituri, were returned to their families after spending two to three months in captivity in the Malembi forest.

The attack in Makeu came after the ADF takeover of Makumo, announced on 29 October, and the day after new house fires in Ituri.
