The Ministry of Health of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) reports 5,103 deaths among 10,467 confirmed Ebola cases. The cumulative case fatality rate is 48.8%, while 2,824 patients have been declared recovered and 980 people are hospitalised or in quarantine, according to the ministry’s latest epidemiological report.
Ituri province, in the north-east of the DRC, remains the epicentre of the epidemic, accounting for 70.8% of cumulative confirmed cases and 60.4% of newly reported cases. Since the epidemic began, 67 of the 178 health zones across eight provinces have been affected. Health authorities are calling for high levels of epidemiological surveillance to be maintained, investigations into suspected cases to be strengthened and contact tracing to be improved in areas where the system has shortcomings.
This toll follows figures published on 28 October on 10,000 cases and nearly 5,000 deaths, then on 1 November on the death toll passing 5,000, with Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
