Between 40,000 and 60,000 people are expected in Paris for a new social mobilisation against the cost of living and in support of young people, according to BFMTV. France’s Interior Ministry expects 70,000 police officers and gendarmes across the country, while 150 to 400 radical activists are being monitored.
French authorities expect 150 to 400 radical activists to attend the mobilisation planned for Saturday in Paris, according to BFMTV. The gathering is due to link Place de la République and Place de la Nation, at the call of several student trade union organisations and regional trade union bodies, to protest against the cost of living and in support of young people.
The national security deployment renewed on Friday provides for 70,000 police officers and gendarmes to be mobilised across France, French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez announced. Authorities are particularly concerned about damage to street furniture and violence against public buildings or businesses, while expected trade union participation in Paris is likely to be lower than at the 5 November rally, according to BFMTV.
Place de la Concorde is also under particular surveillance because of a gathering announced by Yellow Vest groups. The demonstration has been banned by an administrative decision, according to BFMTV.
The mobilisation follows the 5 November protests against the cost of living, which drew 65,000 people in Paris according to France’s Interior Ministry, and the call by French trade unions and student groups to demonstrate on Saturday.
