The West African Economic and Monetary Union is training inspectors and technicians in Ouagadougou on standards for managing obstacles around airports. The five-day session focuses on Annex 14 of the International Civil Aviation Organisation and also includes Mauritania, according to Lefaso.
Inspectors and technical staff from the civil aviation authorities of WAEMU member states and Mauritania are taking part in a five-day training course in Ouagadougou on aerodrome safety. They are studying the standards in Annex 14 of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) concerning obstacle limitation surfaces, according to Lefaso.
The training focuses in particular on the risks posed by buildings, pylons and other installations near runways that could hinder aircraft during take-off or landing. The meeting brings together representatives of civil aviation authorities and aerodrome operators from the sub-region.
The opening ceremony, held on 26 October 2026, featured speeches by Abdoul Aziz Amoussa, director general of Burkina Faso’s National Civil Aviation Agency, and Jonas Gbian, WAEMU commissioner. Abdoul Aziz Amoussa presented regional cooperation as a way to improve air transport safety and support the development of access to landlocked areas.
Jonas Gbian said the WAEMU Commission wanted to draw on the expertise available in the sub-region to gradually create a network of trainers from the member states, Lefaso reports.
