A van hit seven pupils aged between five and 12 in Aboabo, in Ghana’s Ashanti Region, killing four and injuring three. The driver was arrested and police are investigating the causes of the loss of control, the Ghanaian Times reports.
Four pupils from the School of Islamic Studies at Akotosu were killed and three others injured on Tuesday when a Hyundai van left the road and hit the group at Aboabo, in Ghana’s Asokore Mampong Municipality. The victims, aged between five and 12, were preparing to cross the road after lessons, the Ghanaian Times reports.
The four children who died, Juraid Mohammed, Anisah Ibrahim, Fati Muniru and Raiyan Faisal, were pronounced dead on arrival at Manhyia District Hospital. Two injured pupils, Laila Muniru, 12, and Bushira Musapha, five, were in critical condition and transferred to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, while Saisa Bila, six, was in a stable condition at Manhyia.
Airport District Police arrested the driver and impounded the damaged vehicle during the investigation. According to witnesses cited by the Ghanaian Times, the van lost control while going down a slope before mounting the pavement where the children were standing.
The school’s head, Bawa Abdul-Rahman, called on the Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly to build a footbridge to protect pupils and other pedestrians. The incident occurred five days after the previous publication about the deaths of four pupils in Aboabo, on 21 October.
