The Africam project presented in Saint-Louis research findings on pathogens circulating between wildlife, domestic animals and humans. Participants recommended strengthening health surveillance and collaboration between researchers, technical services and communities, according to Seneweb.
The Africam project has strengthened surveillance of pathogens transmissible between animals, humans and their environment in the Saint-Louis region. Its findings were presented on 21 and 22 October at a workshop to review and close the project, according to Seneweb.
The research focused on primates, rodents and domestic animals to identify health risks and adapt contingency plans. Analyses of rodents found no circulation of Rift Valley fever virus, following the epidemic that affected Senegal in 2025, according to the regional director of Livestock and Animal Production, Mouhamed Moustapha Sarr.
The project also brought researchers, academics, technical services and communities together around the “One Health” approach. Participants called for these collaborations to be maintained and for surveillance of diseases such as Lassa fever to be strengthened, according to Seneweb.
The workshop comes after schools resumed in the Saint-Louis region, announced on 19 October, and Saint-Louis was cleaned up after the rainy season, launched on 21 October.
