SONAGED has deployed more than 200 workers and seven lorries for a post-rainy-season operation in Saint-Louis, supported by excavators, street sweepers and several state services. The city produces more than 500 tonnes of waste a week, with peaks of 800 tonnes, director-general Abba Mbaye told APS.
The National Agency for Integrated Waste Management (SONAGED) mobilised more than 200 workers and seven lorries for post-rainy-season clean-up operations in Saint-Louis, in northern Senegal. Excavators and street sweepers are also part of the operation, according to the public company’s director-general, Abba Mbaye, who was speaking on Wednesday after its launch on the city’s seafront.
The defence and security forces, firefighters, the Water and Forestry Services, and representatives of the state are also taking part in the operations. Abba Mbaye said Saint-Louis was chosen because of health and tourism concerns, as the tourist season approaches and hoteliers raise concerns about hygiene and cleanliness.
The city produces more than 500 tonnes of waste a week, with peaks of up to 800 tonnes, the director-general said. He said population growth was outstripping current collection capacity and that SONAGED needed to reorganise its services, strengthen infrastructure and develop pre-collection.
The operation is also intended to draw on Saint-Louis’s experience in organising waste management in Senegal. Abba Mbaye said he wanted to make the city a model for the rest of the country.
