The Kaolack Regional Blood Transfusion Centre has collected nearly 8,000 blood bags since it began operating, its director, Dr Babacar Diagne, said. This total, reached before the end of the year, exceeds the approximately 7,000 bags previously collected each year by the regional hospital’s blood bank, according to APS.
The Kaolack Regional Blood Transfusion Centre (CRTS) has collected nearly 8,000 blood bags since it began operating, its director, Dr Babacar Diagne, told the Senegalese Press Agency (APS). The volume is expected to exceed that of the regional hospital’s blood bank, which collected around 7,000 bags a year.
Inaugurated on 9 December 2025, the centre aims to increase the mobilisation of voluntary and regular donors. It can also separate a bag of whole blood into red blood cells, platelets and clotting factors; these products can meet the needs of several patients, and a single bag can thus save up to three lives, according to Babacar Diagne.
The CRTS laboratory prepares and checks donations before they are used. The facility also reduces the need for patients from Kaolack and nearby areas to travel to Dakar to access blood products, its director added. The centre comes under the policy of the National Blood Transfusion Centre, which provides for a specialised facility in each regional capital.
