Senegalese Prime Minister Al Aminou Lô dismissed the idea of a public debate with his predecessor Ousmane Sonko on the government’s budget policy. At an interministerial meeting, he said his focus should be on the cost of living, agriculture, livestock farming and fishing.
Senegalese Prime Minister Al Aminou Lô on Thursday 22 October 2026 dismissed the idea of a public debate on the government’s budget policy, proposed by Ousmane Sonko, president of the National Assembly and his predecessor as prime minister. “As head of government, my time and intellectual and physical energy are focused on these urgent issues, rather than on debates” that fall within Parliament’s remit, he said at an interministerial meeting, according to Seneweb.
Al Aminou Lô put the high cost of living and household purchasing power at the centre of his government’s priorities. He also cited increased resources for agriculture, livestock farming and fishing, saying these sectors could help address Senegalese people’s daily difficulties.
Ousmane Sonko had proposed a debate on the 2026 amended finance bill on Monday. The president of the National Assembly disputes, in particular, decisions on subsidies for petroleum products, family security grants, social funds and the economic and social recovery plan, which he considers at odds with the National Transformation Agenda.
The head of government’s response comes after several statements on the budget deadlock, including Amadou Ba’s denunciation of the removal of CFA francs 555 billion in investment on 21 October according to Amadou Ba.
