A rumour portrayed former Senegalese president Macky Sall as a candidate to lead the International Organisation of La Francophonie, four days after he withdrew from the race for UN secretary-general. The candidacy was quickly denied, Senenews reports.
Former Senegalese president Macky Sall is not seeking the post of secretary-general of the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF), his entourage said the day after a rumour emerged that he would run to succeed Louise Mushikiwabo. Mankeur Ndiaye, a former Senegalese minister and member of Macky Sall’s UN campaign team, described the report as “absolutely false”, Senenews reports.
Abdou Mbow, deputy spokesperson for the Alliance for the Republic (APR), Macky Sall’s party, said the former president “is not a candidate for anything at all”. According to people close to him cited by Senenews, efforts had even been made to persuade him to stand, but he refused.
The rumour emerged on 21 October, four days after Macky Sall’s withdrawal from the race for UN secretary-general was announced on 17 October. The withdrawal prompted several reactions, including that of the collective of victims of Macky Sall’s withdrawal.
